Jimbo. I am unlikely to recognise you - am pretty rubbish at remembering faces. Carrying the photo of you & Mia to assist seems a bit wierd so I'll have to rely on you.

|
|
As promised here is last night's gig report.
The journey to the venue was unusual. As it was Halloween there were a high number of ghosts, ghouls and witches on public transport including two girls who couldn't understand why the alcohol they had added to their jelly concoctions had separated out on cooling and formed a layer at the bottom. They were on their way to a party, which they were hosting, so this was a cause of some concern!
The venue itself was mid size, would hold a few hundred people, above a large pub and nicely laid out.
As I don't recognise any of the Mia fan club yet I plonked myself in the middle of the audience area in the forlorn hope that someone would come up & introduce themselves. Where were you Jimbo?
First act on was Newton Faulkner, a guitarist vocalist of considerable finger ability. He had the added appeal of being quite a comedian in introducing each number and even did an audience participation song.
Second act were Jonas & Plunkett, a male vocal duo, one on guitar.
Third up, with an audience following next to me, was Jess Murphy, a blonde female singer with an enthusiastic delivery and some very thoughtful songs.
Last performer in the first part of the evening was the familiar Ben Mark who impressed with "A new string to pull" and "Fixer upper"
By this time I was watching the time, as I have to train north out of London home and get up at 5.30am to travel back to work in Surrey. After the interval our own Mia came on, with Ben on the strings as usual and performed "Miss Communication" "Trouble all the Way" and "A lot like me".
Ben seemed to be in experimental mood and was giving the frets a tough time. Not sure if that was what earned the dedication of TATW to him but he probably deserves it anyway.
All too short as always and not enough songs in her set from my perspective but then I'm biased. Don't ask me do describe her outfit for the fashion conscious out there, I'm a bloke. She was wearing, er clothes. Ben had a t shirt and trousers on (but I only remember that because we had a brief guitar related chat afterwards)
Worried that I ought to think about going, I was fortunate that the next band needed some set up time so there was a pause of a few minutes before the next act, which allowed me to speak to briefly to Mia who was very kind and thanked me for coming along (she thanked me and I never quite managed to say "er actually thanks for performing") and explained that she was off early in the morning somewhere else so wasn't staying.
For those of you who thought of coming and didn't, you missed a good Mia performance (but then is there a bad one) along with some above average other acts who were good value for a evening that was for a good cause anyway.
Judie and Bailey in the audience again; they are very supportive of Mia and I think that's wonderful. Lucie came along too but kept a low profile (by which I mean I didn't talk to her).
Lots of eggs on the pavement on the way home but luckily no one felt it necessary to throw one at me.
Looking forward to Thursday at the Cobden and will report back here. I have a day off on Friday too so won't have to sorry about the time so much. Blimey it's got cold suddenly.
Regards

Thanks , Dud, for another great review. It`s such a shame that being up in Norwich prevents me from making too many trips to London to see Mia perform. Plus, this gig had a very attractive line-up all round.
As I`m also co-running a monthly acoustic night up here ( we had one the night following the Orange gig , in fact, which made it doubly difficult to come down ) it`s also interesting to read your opinions of the venues themselves , and how well-organised they are ( or not ! )
Many thanks , again ! |
