If you`ve never heard of Nick Drake , just take a look at the influences cited by all your favourite singer-songwriters , and chances are the names Jeff Buckley and Nick Drake will crop up.

Sadly, Nick died young , many years ago , after releasing just three albums . His death is still the subject of controversy; he had suffered from depression , and either committed suicide or accidentally took an overdose of his prescribed anti-depressants ( such things were not so well-tested in those days, and look what happened just recently in field of drug-testing in the UK)

Even without the added aura that dying young( sadly) brings to an artist, Nick would have been a huge influence on every young person who ever picked up a guitar and wrote a song. He was a true maverick....a pioneer of bizarre guitar tunings which remain a mystery to some even today , a great player, a resolutely British singing voice, and a neat line in haunting , if oblique, songs .

Seek him out and give him a listen. The albums may sound old in their production ( late 60`s to early 70`s ) but it`s still amazing stuff. And for those of you who have heard the excellent Teddy Thompson( and if not, you should ) that`s Teddy`s Dad , Richard, on electric guitar on several of Nick`s tracks....another true hero !

I came home the other day to find my son ( who plays in a loud and spiky-sounding rock band ) listening intently to my collection of Nick Drake CDs , and he proclaimed him a genius !
